London River Services

The Thames has always been a busy waterway. For centuries the only way to cross the Thames was the London Bridge or by boat. During the 20th Century the river saw a decline as other forms of transport were cheaper and easier. In 1999 the city of London created the London River Service. It became responsible for all ferries and commercial water activity on the Thames. The most important responsibility of this service was integration with other transportation services in London. Now the piers of the London River Service are close to major London Underground, National Rail and DLR stations to make interchanges easier. Some important piers are:

  • Blackfriars Millennium Pier
  • Canary Wharf Pier
  • London Eye Pier
  • Millbank Millenium Pier
  • St Helena Pier
  • Tower Millennium Pier
  • Westminster Millennium Pier
